Featuring Ambriel and Jester

Spring, 769 YNA

Glenmore, Glenwood

Part II

Jester

Jey had been running for far too long. His untrained leg muscles were already soar as he huffed under his breath: “Not yet again! Wait!” he cried with his last breath, catching a quick glance on the fire red bushy tail once more, just to see it vanish again. Jester broke through the undergrowth. This day was truly one filled with exercise much more than it was to his liking.

There - again something red caught his eye. This time further down to the ground than before. To his own surprise he managed to increase his speed and crushed a couple of branches and almost slipped on a bunch of mushrooms before he realized that this red was a far bigger animal than a squirrel and also not moving away from him. That was when he literally bumped into a young hind. A red young hind. Jey completely taken by surprise as he hardly ever was took a step back and blinked a couple of times before he had collected himself to speak: “I apologize, young Beauty. You took me by surprise in many ways.” He smiled at her as he eyed her. She was a rare beauty indeed. Her coat was of a brownish red and covered in stripes. Her hair was a vibrant red, probably what he had mistaken for Ruby, full and wavy and just loosely held together by a particularly vibrant pink flower. Her neck was decorated by a clam necklace and a green hanging charm he could not quite determine what it was made of and on her front knees she wore cuffs. She looked rather young, however her whole composure made him tilt his head a bit as it made him unsure whether she was not older than she looked. She carried herself in a confident and independant. And again there it was. That feeling he had already had with Ruby. This hind was something special. In that moment Jey wondered whether he just had a soft spot for the colour of fire.

Ambriel

The striped doe was grazing peacefully in the shade of a tree. She had been down here before, but now that she no longer worried about not being home late, she had discovered that with far more time at hand she learned a lot more about the land she had grown up in. One thing she had learned first, definitely was that the food down here was a lot tastier than the dry and salty grass she knew from The Needle. And down here were a lot more animals than there too. Talking about that, a little squirrel had shown up, sitting in front of her.

“Hey there, little buddy.” the young doe smiled at the squirrel, “Would you like a nut? Here…” reaching up, she plucked a nut from the tree and held it out for the squirrel, who took it after  moment of hesitation, before taking it into it’s tiny paws and starting to nibble on it. Ambriel giggled at the sight. These little critters were just too adorable.

And then something bumped right into her. A gasp escaping her, the red doe almost fell over, while the squirrel quickly ran up the tree, chattering angrily at whoever had just disturbed their peaceful meal. Looking over her shoulder with a frown, Ambriel found the person to having intruded so very impolitely was a stag. He was about as tall as she was, yet obviously older than her. She had discovered that most people in Glenmore weren’t as tall as her family, but more on the height range of her adoptive sister, Lassie.

“Excuse me? First I’m not your Beauty and secondly I do believe that you were the one who took me by surprise! Running over people like that, honestly, you gotta look were you’re going!” she said with a little shake of her head.

Jester

“Fair enough”, Jester laughed, realizing that he had been right with his assumption that this doe was something special indeed. She didn’t react like any doe Jey had so far met, and by Óganach, that was many!

“Fair enough”, he repeated after a short moment to gather himself: “A beauty however for sure you are. It’s impossible you have not been told before.” Smiling with a genuine nod he took another step back: “Of course, of course, you are totally right, Miss. I was heavily distracted as I … well”, he made a pause, as a sarcastic chuckle had made its way into his speech: “well, I guess you deserve some honesty… I have been running after a squirrel - a fast one at that.” Jester had almost forgotten how it felt to be embarrassed. Hardly anything could embarrass him. He was used to make a fool of himself in front of crowds. But he was doing this purposely. This was different. A grown stag chasing a squirrel through the glenwood and bumping into a hind? What was that… “I know it sounds quite ridiculous, but given you’re from Glenmore, you might be used to ridiculous behaviour… Too many bored fawnlings all over the place…”

Ambriel

“You already said that…” Ambriel just muttered, her brows furrowing slightly, when the stag once more assured her how beautiful she was. Then again, she had the feeling he was just trying to be friendly. He did seem like the sort of fawnling that liked to talk big, probably an entertainer. Ambriel had seen those before and they too always had been great with big words and gestures. So, despite still not approving of calling random people beautiful, she decided to just drop the subject. There was no harm done, after all.

When he then told about the squirrel he had been chasing and how he was making a fool of himself, but how this too was probably nothing new in GLenmore, Ambriel couldn’t help somewhat of a chuckle, “Yeah, I actually grew up near The Needle, where we have more important things to do than chase squirrels and be bored.” she winked, before looking up into the tree, where the squirrel from before was still sitting, looking down at them, “Where you looking for this little friend up there?” she asked, returning her gaze to the stag.

Jester

Jester grinned at the young hind. She was quite a spirited thing with expressive eyes and a clear speech. Jey had a sixth sense for talent and here he found there was a whole load of unseen natural skill that had potential in so many ways. His curiosity was triggered. Until Bree pointed upwards.

Jey followed her eyes and there it was. This little red squirrel that looked down at him with a strange sort of look of reproach. It was as if the two red creatures on earth and on a tree had come to the agreement that a stag like Jey was just a fool. And with that they definitely were not all that wrong at all. Jester was long used to being the fool. It was his job.

“Oh, that is definitely Ruby”, he laughed without turning his eyes away from the little red devil.
